About Teapot Labradors
Teapot Labradors is a small, but serious interest for us. We are not a kennel, we do not have a kennel. We have a home and that is where all of our dogs and puppies live.
We are located in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains on the shore of Oseetah Lake. The name Teapot Labradors was created when it became apparent that our girl Stella was not going to get any bigger. She was called a miniature Labrador by many, but those that knew her best simply considered her to be an English-style labrador which are best described as "short and stout"...just like "a little teapot". The name stuck and Teapot Labradors was born.
Our love of Labradors began when our first dog, Ripley came into our lives in 1998. Back then Ripley was an only dog and she went everywhere with us. If we went to a friends for dinner she came along, when we went to Idaho for a summer to work on an organic farm, she came along, when we traveled throughout the western U.S. from the Rocky mountains to the Pacific ocean to the streets of Las Vegas, Ripley came along. She was always calm and happy with a bounce in her step and a wag in her tail. She was always pleased to be a part of whatever we were doing. We made many friends along the way with the help of our Labrador.
Her constant companionship inspired us to learn more about Assistance Dogs. Our research led us to Susquehanna Service Dogs (SSD). I (Cindy) began working for SSD in 2001 as a trainer. My position evolved into Training Coordinator as the program grew. Michael came on board as the Puppy Coordinator a few years later. For 5 years, we raised, trained and placed Labradors as Service dogs for people with disabilities. We worked with hundreds of Labradors. We oversaw SSD's breeding program and bred many, many litters of puppies for SSD. We also trained and placed numerous dogs with people with disabilities. We saw firsthand the amazing impact a furry companion could make in a person and families life. The dogs were trained to do many tasks; they could pick up dropped objects, retrieve a phone, get help and open doors. However when we asked our clients what the most important thing their dog did for them, the answer was the same over and over "my dog is my best friend, he is always there and happy to be with me."
We see Teapot Labradors as an extension of the work we did at Susquehanna Service Dogs. The experience we gained determining and developing those qualities necessary to become a solid working dog, help us today in breeding the best dog possible to be the best companion possible for you and your family. We feel almost everyone could use a calm, gentle and loving Labrador friend.
